Performing your banking tasks online has become one of the most popular avenues for customers to use. Whether using your mobile phone, tablet or computer, online banking provides great convenience and efficiency with your time.
With that said, some customers are uneasy about doing their banking online for security reasons. It is true that when being careless with your online banking you can potentially run into trouble. Our goal with this four-part series is to provide you with a few security tips to keep in mind whenever you are online – banking or otherwise. This first part will discuss mobile device security. Part two covers online security, part three touches on passwords, and we close with a couple tips on computer security.
At the bottom of each of these posts we have included four links to wonderful resources about securing your online banking activities. Additionally, please follow us on Facebook, where we will include #CyberSecuritySunday tips a few times each month.
Mobile Device Security
- Configure your device to require a passcode to gain access if this feature is supported in your device. When not using your device, lock the screen to prevent unauthorized access to it.
- Avoid storing sensitive information. Mobile devices have a high likelihood of being lost or stolen, so you should avoid using them to store sensitive information (i.e. passwords, account numbers, etc.). If sensitive data is stored, enable encryption to secure it.
- Keep your mobile device’s software updated. Just as you would update your PC, patches and updates should be updated as soon as possible once available. Use the automatic update option if one is available.
- Delete all information stored on a device before the device changes ownership. Use a “hard factory reset” to permanently erase all content and settings stored on the device.
- “Sign out” or “log off” when finished with an app rather than simply closing it.
- Utilize antivirus software where applicable (i.e. Android, Windows, etc.). Do not jailbreak or otherwise circumvent security controls.
